This chapter provides a systematic examination of the existing research on child-friendly built environments and their effects on children’s travel behaviors. It includes an outline of the research context for this study, the foundational theories of travel patterns, and the definitions and assessment metrics for built environments. It explores the influences of built environments on children’s mode choices, active commuting, independent mobility, and safety considerations. Furthermore, discussions on nonlinear modeling approaches and urban-rural fringe specifics are incorporated. These elements form an analytical foundation from which in-depth explorations unfold in the ensuing chapters of this study.

摘要

This chapter provides a systematic examination of the existing research on child-friendly built environments and their effects on children’s travel behaviors. It includes an outline of the research context for this study, the foundational theories of travel patterns, and the definitions and assessment metrics for built environments. It explores the influences of built environments on children’s mode choices, active commuting, independent mobility, and safety considerations. Furthermore, discussions on nonlinear modeling approaches and urban-rural fringe specifics are incorporated. These elements form an analytical foundation from which in-depth explorations unfold in the ensuing chapters of this study.
