Introducing SMALL STEPS: A Virtual Reality Platform for First Aid Training
摘要
Up to 59% of injury-related deaths could be prevented with basic first aid (McNulty, 2016), yet many individuals lack the confidence or training to act. SMALL STEPS is a VR-based serious game designed to bridge this gap by providing immersive and engaging first aid training. Developed on the Unity Engine, the system uses gamification principles, such as progress tracking, quizzes, and real-time feedback, to simulate realistic emergency scenarios, including burns, gas leaks, and severe bleeding. This safe and scalable platform allows users to practice life-saving procedures in a controlled environment, enhancing knowledge retention and confidence. Initial user testing shows a high level of engagement in first aid training. With its modular design, SMALL STEPS is adaptable for various training contexts, demonstrating the transformative potential of VR in education and skill acquisition. This work underscores the value of gamified VR environments in making critical training accessible, effective, and impactful.
