Two Decadal Snow Cover Area Variation of Beas River Basin with the Help of Cloud Computing
摘要
Alpine snow is an essential part of the water cycle as runoff and ecosystem of arid/semi-arid region solely depends on these glaciers. Around 1.4 billion people depends directly or indirectly on the water coming from Himalaya snow melts as source of fresh water, agriculture and economic requirement. The trends analysis of snow-covered area and glacier melt has always carried a significant importance in research fraternity. Since Himalayan region is highly rugged and detailed information is available for only few glaciers so to overcome this limitation remote sensing technique can play a very important role to detecting all the glaciers information. In this study, the snow-covered area is estimated for the Beas River Basin, situated in Himachal Pradesh for the duration from 2000 to 2020. The present study highlights the effectiveness of using the geospatial techniques for assessment of snow cover area in the Beas river Basin. Moderate resolution imaging spectroradiometer (MODIS) snow product with spatial resolution 8-day Terra (MOD09A1) is utilized, and snow cover area (SCA) is calculated with the help Google Earth Engine (GEE) on the monthly basis. These results have been compared with the SCA obtained from National Remote Sensing Centre web portal ( https://bhuvan.nrsc.gov.in ) developed by Indian Space Research Organization. Strong correlation (R2 > 0.9) is observed with National Remote Sensing Center (NRSC) Bhuvan data.
