Silicon Nanoparticles Uptake and Translocation in Plants Help Improving Plant Growth

The use of silicon on plants and its use in enhancing plant growth is a well-established field of scientific research but the use of silica nanoparticles on plants is an emerging field of scientific research. Silicon nanoparticles (SiNPs) are a new technology in the field of agriculture, which provides multifunctional advantages to sustainable agriculture. They have proven high effectiveness at stimulating crop development and can increase plant resistance to various biotic and abiotic stresses either directly or indirectly by fortifying antioxidant defence systems. SiNPs allow plants to overcome several stressors, which is a high-efficiency and cost-effective approach to plant protection. Although a significant advance has been made on the elucidation of the various roles and mechanisms underlying the application of SiNPs in promoting agricultural sustainability in the last 10 years, a synthesis of the literature has not been achieved yet. Efforts are being in continuation to do more research so that more impact and various role of SiNPs can be unfold in the coming years. This book chapter provides a collective information about the use, method of use and various outcome of SiNPs applications in agriculture.
