Cultural and Heritage Dimensions of Sustainable Tourism

This chapter explores the relationship between cultural heritage and tourism within a sustainability framework. It emphasizes the importance of preserving both tangible and intangible cultural assets. The chapter discusses community-based tourism as a means of promoting cultural integrity and local participation. It critically examines tourism’s impact on Indigenous communities, including both opportunities and risks of cultural commodification. Cultural sensitivity and ethical tourism practices are highlighted as essential for responsible tourism. Case studies demonstrate successful models of cultural tourism that balance preservation and development. The chapter concludes that tourism can contribute to cultural sustainability when managed inclusively and ethically.
