Impact of ADHD on Sexuality

Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) influences a wide array of life domains, including sexuality and intimate relationships. While existing literature has extensively documented ADHD’s impact on academic achievement, occupational functioning, and social interactions, its effects on sexual health, behaviors, and relational dynamics have received comparatively limited scholarly attention. Core ADHD traits—such as impulsivity, inattention, and emotional dysregulation—can shape patterns of sexual behavior, influence intimacy, and affect relationship satisfaction across the lifespan. These characteristics may contribute to both challenges and risks within sexual and romantic contexts, as well as opportunities for heightened emotional intensity and spontaneity in intimate relationships. This chapter critically explores the intersection between ADHD and sexuality, focusing on the psychological, behavioral, and relational dimensions of sexual experiences among individuals with ADHD.
