Introduction to Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder and Public Health
摘要
This chapter provides a comprehensive introduction to attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), emphasizing its clinical characteristics, epidemiological patterns, and lifelong impact. ADHD is a prevalent neurodevelopmental condition that affects individuals across different stages of life, influencing academic achievement, occupational success, and overall well-being. Recognizing ADHD as both a medical and public health concern highlights the importance of integrating prevention, intervention, and advocacy to mitigate its negative effects. By situating ADHD within the broader framework of health systems and policies, this chapter lays a foundation for understanding its multidimensional nature and the critical need for targeted strategies to address its challenges. The discussion underscores the necessity of early identification, equitable access to interventions, and the role of public health initiatives in shaping effective responses. The chapter is structured into seven key subsections: an overview of ADHD, epidemiology of ADHD, factors influencing ADHD, historical perspectives on ADHD, framing ADHD in the lifespan context, public health implications of ADHD across the lifespan, and the importance of a public health approach. Each section explores specific dimensions of ADHD, providing a detailed examination of its etiology, impact, and management strategies. Through this analysis, the chapter highlights the significance of a comprehensive public health response in addressing ADHD at individual, community, and policy levels.
