Comparison of Light and Electron Microscopy of Common Humoral Cells

Under light microscopy (Fig. 2.1), normal mesothelial cells are sometimes difficult to distinguish from macrophages. Under electron microscopy, the nucleus of normal mesothelial cells is round (Fig. 2.2), with a circle of heterochromatin at the edge of the nuclear membrane, and the rest is euchromatin, and the nucleolus is obvious, indicating active cell synthesis; the cytoplasm is irregular, with visible pseudopods and folds, and the cytoplasm is richer in organelles, with visible inclusion bodies and active cytosolic drinking. Macrophages have irregular nuclei, more heterochromatin, no nucleolus or smaller nucleolus, and elongated pseudopods at the cytoplasmic margin, unlike mesothelial cells with blunt rounded pseudopods and folds. Normal mesothelial cells have fewer free ribosomes, lighter cytoplasmic color, and less mitochondria and endoplasmic reticulum, as do nuclear heterogeneous mesothelial cells, thus distinguishing mesothelial cells from tumor cells.
