Characterization of Driving Behavior Under Different Lane Widths in a Highway Construction Zone

The driving behavior of drivers can be influenced by various factors, and the results often directly affect driving safety and riding comfort. To study driving behavior under different lane widths in highway construction areas, a comprehensive analysis of vehicle speed and trajectory was conducted, taking into account the driver’s pedal throttle, steering wheel steering, electromyographic data, and subjective feelings during driving. From four perspectives, the impact of lane width changes on driver driving behavior was analyzed based on the actual speed coordination and lateral deviation of the vehicle. The experiment involves two different lanes and lane positions, namely the passenger and freight lanes on the outside of the road and the passenger and freight lanes in the middle of the road. Five lane width schemes of 2.75 m/3.00 m/3.25 m/3.5 m/3.75 m are set on the passenger and freight lanes, and four-lane width schemes of 3.00 m/3.25 m/3.5 m/3.75 m are set on the passenger and freight lanes. Under different lane width conditions, by observing and measuring the driver’s pedal throttle data and electromyographic data, combined with the vehicle’s speed coordination and lateral displacement under different schemes, and finally considering subjective feelings, a comprehensive comparative analysis is conducted to analyze the impact of lane width on driver behavior. This can be used as a relevant factor for driving safety, driving stability, and driving comfort, providing the relevant basis for the construction of highway lane width.
