Study of Lane Width and Trajectory Deviation in the Construction Area of Highway

Traffic flow in the highway construction zone can be severely disrupted during highway reconstruction and expansion. We conducted simulated driving experiments using UC-win/Road to address this issue. The passenger-car lane and lateral widths in highway construction zones can be based on the experimental results. In the simulated driving scenarios, five different passenger-car lane width schemes and two different lateral width schemes were designed, and the data were collected in the process of vehicle driving for analysis and research. This paper adopts the standard deviation of lateral offsets distance, driving speed data, and the questionnaire survey of 10 drivers to analyze and measure the trajectory deviation of the vehicle in the driving simulation scenario. The results reveal the following facts. ①If the passenger-car lane width is too narrow, the driver will be forced to drive at a lower speed. If the passenger-car lane width is too wide, the lateral offset distance of the vehicle is large, which affects the driving stability and safety. ② If the lateral width is too narrow, the driver will drive at a lower speed. Speed stability will be poor, which affects driving safety. Based on the analysis of the above data results, it is concluded that in the highway construction zone, the passenger-car lane width that better meets the requirements of road traffic safety and level of service is 3.0 m, followed by 3.25 m. The lateral width that better meets the requirements of road traffic safety and level of service is 0.75 m.
