Overview and Bibliometric Analysis of Text Mining in Transportation Field

In the last decade, there has been a proliferation of publications and text data in the transportation field, including traffic department accident records, transportation publications, social media comments and more. These data contain critical information, and manually analyzing large amounts of text requires much time and effort. As a powerful tool, text mining can automatically mine textual intrinsic connections, patterns, trends, and underly data patterns from unstructured textual information, and then extract valuable knowledge that can be easily interpreted. This work reviews the literature to explore the application of text mining in the transportation field. Specifically, an introduction to the basic steps and main applications of text mining are firstly provided, and then the cross-studies between text mining and transportation through bibliometrix are visualized and analyzed. Next, several popular sub-themes in the literature are identified, and finally, the entire paper is summarized, and relevant insights are presented, limitations of current research and potential future research directions are discussed as well.
