Compost Leachate from Food and Vegetable Wastes as Alternative Fertilizers for Brazilian Spinach (Alternanthera sissoo)

This study evaluated the feasibility of using compost leachate as a substitute for conventional commercial fertilizers to improve the growth of Brazilian spinach (Alternanthera sissoo). Three treatments were prepared with replicates: food-waste compost leachate (FWCL), diluted vegetable-waste compost leachate (DVWCL), and diluted commercial fertilizer (DCF). The nitrogen level for each plant was maintained at 5 mg throughout 4 weeks cultivation period. Growth parameters, including leaf, stem, and root development were measured using ImageJ software after 4 weeks. One-way ANOVA was performed to statistically analyze growth data. The results showed that Brazilian spinach treated with FWCL and DVWCL showed similar growth responses to those treated with DCF, with no significant differences among treatments (p > 0.05). Dilution of VWCL and CF effectively reduced electrical conductivity (EC) and heavy metal concentrations to within permissible limits. These findings demonstrate the potential of compost leachates (FWCL and DVWCL) as alternatives to commercial fertilizers for Brazilian spinach cultivation. This study also highlights that proper dilution is essential to ensure heavy metal levels remain safe for agricultural use.
