This chapter outlines the major design thinking perspectives that have emerged - from the highly intuitive practices of craftsmen to the Design Methods Movement in 1960s, to more recent developments in designerly thinking, design cognition, human-centred Design Thinking, situated design thinking, and critical perspectives. It establishes the background for understanding the key concepts associated with design thinking and analyzes the existing gaps in the theoretical conceptions of design thinking.
