Care of Clients with Anxiety Disorders
摘要
Anxiety disorders are among the most common mental disorders, affecting 5% of the world’s population. These disorders are characterized by excessive or inappropriate levels of anxiety and anxiety-related symptoms, causing difficulties in carrying out normal activities. There are several types of anxiety disorders—generalized anxiety disorder, panic disorder, social anxiety disorder, specific phobia, and agoraphobia. These are distinguished based on the presence or absence of specific triggers and on their symptom profile. If untreated, anxiety disorders can cause significant impairment in interpersonal and social relationships, education, and employment. Anxiety disorders can be treated with medications, psychological interventions, or a combination of both. Nurses play an active role in the care of anxiety disorders in community and clinic settings. This chapter provides an overview of the symptoms, diagnosis, and treatment of anxiety disorders, and outlines the role of nurses in evaluating and managing patients who present with these conditions.
