摘要

This study examines the intricate relationship between mercantile areas and the housing industry, focusing on the Bankerohan Public Market in Davao City, Philippines. By employing qualitative research methods, including interviews and observations, the research investigates how these bustling marketplaces serve as melting pots for diverse socio-cultural views while simultaneously influencing housing perceptions among vendors and consumers. The findings illustrate that mercantile areas not only facilitate economic transactions but also foster social interactions and cultural exchanges that shape community identity. Furthermore, the study highlights how the dynamics within these markets can impact attitudes towards vertical housing solutions, revealing both opportunities and challenges for urban development. This comprehensive analysis underscores the need for integrated approaches in urban planning that consider the interconnectedness of mercantile spaces and housing solutions to promote sustainable community growth, aligning with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals—SDG 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities in fostering inclusive, safe, resilient, and sustainable urban environments, and SDG 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth in promoting sustained, inclusive economic development through vibrant local markets.
