Pathways: Applying Gestalt Design Principles in the Development of a Therapeutic Learning Environment for Neurodivergent Children in Davao City
摘要
Creating spaces where neurodivergent children can thrive presents a transformative opportunity for therapeutic design. This study explores the conceptual development of a Playscape, Education, and Therapy Center in Davao City, specifically designed for children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), and Global Developmental Delay (GDD). Grounded in Gestalt design principles—spatial continuity, sensory balance, and visual cohesion—the research bridges perceptual theory and architectural practice to foster inclusivity and sensory harmony. Through interviews with developmental specialists, therapists, and educators, complemented by family surveys and spatial mapping of existing centers, the study identifies the need for adaptive, sensory-responsive spaces. Key features include sensory gyms, decompression rooms, biophilic play zones, and family-integrated areas that encourage engagement and emotional regulation. Aligned with UN SDG 4 (Quality Education) and SDG 10 (Reduced Inequalities), the study demonstrates how Gestalt-informed, inclusive architecture enhances functionality, emotional coherence, and equitable access to therapy and education, advancing neurodiverse development within the built environment.
