The Last Battle: Battling Illness and Death
摘要
Yangming’s health had been deteriorating since the ninth month of the seventh year of the Jiajing period. When he entered Guangxi in the sixth year, he was recovering from an illness and had brought a doctor with him. However, due to the arduous journey, the doctor found an excuse to flee halfway. After arriving in Guangxi, Yangming faced an unfavorable climate and struggled to adapt to the local environment. He feared that his chronic coughing and wheezing would worsen and become incurable. For more than a year, he not only endured the scorching heat of the summer, but also exerted himself mentally and physically to achieve peaceful solutions to the problems in Si’en and Tianzhou and to plan the campaigns against the Duanteng Gorge and Bazhai. He traversed rugged mountains and valleys, risking exposure to poisonous insects and epidemic diseases. Even after the campaigns were over, the physical strain was worsening as he devoted himself to making a plan for long-term stability by personally surveying the terrains, such as treacherous mountains and cliffs. By the tenth month of the seventh year, his health had finally become incurable.
