Yangming said in one of his five poems at Longgang, “Please tell the couple of white cranes on the peak, I won’t stay at Longchang too long.” The remote place was no longer humble or desolate in his eyes because he had attained the realm of transcendental ease through enlightenment and enjoyed reading books and teaching students over there. Even so, he still cared very much about the world. “Who said the cottages at this remote place are humble? As a recluse-official, I have never forgotten the world.” Besides, the unspoilt scenery at Longchang kindled his home thought, as represented by “In a dream, my soul does nothing but wander around the Ye stream and Shun bay.” He was eager to leave Longchang to roam through the Ye Stream and the Shun River or chant a poem at the burial cave of Yu the Great on Mount Kuaiji, as he wrote, “It’s best to tour on a windy, snowy night—Oh, when could I ride a boat to return to Shanyin?” The master was strongly convinced that he would not be left unused too long. Indeed, soon after, Wang Yangming was transferred elsewhere and practiced his theory about sagehood. As a matter of fact, he merely stayed for about 2 years at Longchang from the spring of the third year of the Zhengde period.
