Translator and Interpreter Training in Nigeria: Status, Challenges and Prospects

Apart from foreign languages such as French, Portuguese and Spanish, that are officially used in countries of the West-African sub-region, and by extension, studied and spoken Nigeria is endowed with over 500 languages. Most of the time, translators and interpreters are recruited from outside the country because there are insufficient trained professionals in Nigeria. This explains why the market is largely dominated by untrained and unprofessional interlopers. Using the document analysis approach, in this study, we conducted an analysis of the situation of things regarding professional translator and interpreter training in Nigeria. Data is drawn from primary and secondary sources such as translation and interpretation curricula from universities across the country where such programmes exist presently. A review has shown inadequacy of training for professional translators and interpreters as most of the universities teach only pedagogical translation as means of teaching foreign languages mostly at undergraduate level. At Master’s level, Translation Theories are taught and little or no Interpretation is part of the curriculum. Most of the trained translators and interpreters received their training outside the country. This shows that despite a huge market to be exploited in the translation industry, the Nigerian educational system is not taking advantage of the opportunities available. There is a huge gap between demand and supply regarding the translation and interpreting industry in Nigeria. The findings of our analysis led to recommending measures to fill the gaps, toward a more sustainable training of future professional translators and interpreters that are made in Nigeria.
