Algal Biorefinery: Implications of Global Policy Trends
摘要
Concepts of algal biorefineries have garnered considerable interest recently. It is more important than ever to describe and address the enormous need to build products for a sustainable future in the quickly changing algae-mediated bioeconomy. The concepts of environmental and economic sustainability must always be incorporated into these innovations to help resolve the controversial relationship between the algae’s bioproduct, energy, and ecology. Algal biofuels are heavily impacted by global policies like biofuel mandates and renewable energy targets. These regulations influence the funding of research, innovation, and the need for sustainable energy sources. The ecology, water, and land limitations, however, provide challenges. The future of the sector is also influenced by intergovernmental cooperation, public opinion, and financial incentives. Technology advancement and cost-effectiveness are essential for successful integration, as is maintaining alignment with the global policy landscape as it changes. The evolution of algal biorefineries from research-driven ideas to commercially feasible, climate-aligned industrial solutions depend heavily on policies that offer consistent financial support, encourage public-private partnerships, enforce sustainability metrics, and establish stable markets. The direction, speed, and inclusivity of the development of algal biorefineries are essentially determined by policies. Commercialization success is more likely for nations that incorporate algae into larger bioeconomy, energy, and climate strategies. Through mandates and subsidies, policies influence economic incentives and market access. Investment in algae-based systems is made less risky by blending targets for biofuels, tax credits for low-carbon fuels, and public procurement policies that favour biobased products. Industry consortia and academic partnerships have been more active in nations with stable and long-term policies, such as Australia’s Blue Economy CRC and Japan’s emphasis on nutraceuticals derived from algae. This chapter will discuss the implications of international policy trends on algal biorefinery.
