This chapter analyzes the design principles of IPv4 and IPv6, emphasizing their foundational role in the Internet’s evolution and the ongoing transition between these protocols. It highlights how these principles—guiding the development of widely adopted standards—reflect the Internet’s decentralized nature. While IPv4’s principles were retrospectively formalized after its successful deployment, IPv6’s design emerged from theoretical planning, revealing gaps when applied in practice. Key discussions include compatibility challenges, routing strategies, and features concerning stateless and stateful technologies in distributed systems. The chapter also examines historical lessons from prior protocol transitions, addressing constraints like incremental deployment and user-driven adoption. By synthesizing these insights, the chapter offers a framework for refining transition strategies, ensuring scalability, interoperability, and resilience in future Internet developments.
