Epilogue: From Media Convergence to Platform Cosmopolitanism? The Globalization of Chinese Television in the New Era
摘要
This epilogue examines Chinese television globalization since 2013, exploring the new era characterized by media convergence and platform cosmopolitanism. Building on the book's earlier analysis of internationalization, transnationalization and renationalization (1978–2012), it traces how the industry has integrated traditional broadcasting with digital platforms through multi-platform strategies to enhance competitiveness and global influence. Drawing on archives, interviews, field visits and app walkthroughs, the chapter analyses the evolution of China's four-tier television administration system and the platformization of state-owned broadcasters, examining shifts in ownership, market structure, management, production and content, while highlighting persistent resource inequities between central and local stations. It introduces platform cosmopolitanism as both a state strategy and a producers' vision for cross-cultural communication, navigating the tension between global outreach and national interests in an era of Globalization 2.0, and offering a de-westernized perspective on platform studies. The chapter argues that this phase, reflecting broader Sino-globalization trends and technological innovation, marks an intensified outward turn in soft-power projection, locating Chinese television within global transformation theory and the normative vision of a community with a shared future for mankind.
