Machine Learning has made a significant impact on the food packaging industry by predicting the spoilage of food and monitoring the food items. This chapter involves the use of AI and machine learning techniques and its evolution leading to sustainable development of packaging materials resulting in reducing carbon footprint. Smart and intelligent packaging has also made the machine learning incorporation easy and provides better tools and techniques which benefits the food packaging industry. It uses techniques such as biosensors, IoT based sensors, RFID tags, barcodes and bioplastic to make the food free from contaminants which are capable of causing food-borne disease by analysing change in pH, moisture, gases, etc. ML packaging materials are the alternative of plastic based packaging. Leading companies like Coca-Cola uses machine learning in food packaging process and have solved various problems that other companies might be growing through. Future research should focus upon personalized packaging, insuring more safety of consumers privacy.
