Fault Diagnosis Method of Active Distribution Network Based on Traveling Wave Energy

The access of distributed generation brings new challenges to the operation of distribution network, and quickly identifying the type and location of faults is critical. The paper shows how traveling waves spread in distribution grids when there’s a fault. It uses the current energy characteristics to determine the fault type and fault location. Firstly, extract the various components of the fault current waveform, and calculate the cumulative energy and mean value of the initial time period of the fault. Combined with the location and correlation of the line acquisition points, the fault type is determined, and the fault section is located. The effectiveness of the method is validated through the simulation analysis of a numerical example.
