Family Dynamics and Suicidal Behavior in Bangladesh
摘要
Suicidal behavior is a major preventable public health problem that is still a less prioritized issue in Bangladesh. Risk factors for suicidal behavior are poorly addressed. Available evidence suggests that adverse life events such as familial disharmony, marital disorder, extramarital and premarital love relationship conflict, forceful marriage, and sexual abuse, are a dominant factor for suicide attempts in Bangladesh. As a result, prevention of immediate life events would prevent about 86% of suicides in the country. Prevention strategies for suicide, considering the family dynamics, need to be considered. This chapter aims to explore the association between suicidal behavior and family dynamics in Bangladesh and speculate a way forward for suicide prevention and future studies in the country.
