Literacy and Stigma of Suicide in Bangladesh
摘要
Suicide literacy and stigma are vital components of suicide prevention as they affect reporting and help-seeking for suicidal behaviour in a specific region or country. Being a Muslim-majority country and categorizing suicide attempts as a criminal offense, there is a high stigma about suicide in the country. Current studies are assessing the dimensions and noting that there is high stigma towards suicidal behaviour and low literacy of it that results in under-reporting and misclassification of suicide and low-quality suicide data. Suicide prevention in Bangladesh requires a concerted approach that increases awareness and literacy, decreases stigmatising attitudes, increases the number of resources available, and fortifies surveillance.
