Staying Relevant in the Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR); What Does This Mean for Academics?

The Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR) presents transformative challenges and opportunities for academia, especially within the contexts of South Africa (SA) and the USA (US). This comparative study focuses on examining the implications of the 4IR on academic practices, curriculum development and the skills necessary for graduates to thrive in a rapidly changing workforce. By utilizing a mixed-methods approach that involves administering questionnaires followed by interviews, this study sought to investigate how educational institutions are responding to the 4IR, the preparedness of faculty, and the role of interdisciplinary curricula in cultivating pertinent skills. The significance of this study lies in its contribution to the continuous discourse about the evolving educational landscape in both countries, specifically regarding the urgency to acclimate academic programs in alignment with technological advancements and labour market needs. As accentuated in the literature, there is an increasing acknowledgment that educational paradigms must foster not only technical proficiency but also crucial competencies such as critical thinking, creativity and adaptability (Judijanto in QALAMUNA, 14(1), 529–542, 2022). The findings are anticipated to reveal disparities in preparedness between South African and US institutions, particularly how divergent technological access influences educational quality and equity (Maringe and Chiramba in The emerging discourse of the 4IR: theoretical and conceptual overview in the context of teacher education in South Africa, 1–16, 2022. https://doi.org/10.4102/aosis.2022.bk306.01 ). In the US, whilst the institution seems to be adequately prepared and equipped technologically, academics still believe that they have a way to go in terms of preparation. Moreover, in SA, institutions are seen to be advancing slowly but believe they are equipped for the technological changes in most cases. This unfolds in the paper. Key aspects to be covered include the need for curriculum restructuring to integrate more technology and interdisciplinary methodologies, the prominence of faculty training to meet new pedagogical demands, and the incorporation of industry partnerships to enhance practical learning experiences (Oke and Fernandes in Journal of Open Innovation Technology Market and Complexity, 6(2), 31, 2020).
