Introduction to Artificial Intelligence for Sustainable Development
摘要
This chapter introduces the book’s core focus: exploring how a suite of emerging technologies (AI, IoT, blockchain, quantum computing, XR), as cornerstones of the Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR), are transforming and accelerating Sustainable Development (SD) and the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Grounded in Technological Determinism and Ecological Modernization Theory (EMT), the chapter traces AI’s historical evolution and diverse forms, from its philosophical roots to its twenty-first-century boom, alongside the historical progression of SD from early conservation efforts to the ambitious SDGs. It outlines the chapters investigating AI applications for the 17 SDGs, broadened to include other emerging technologies. It uses an exploratory research design, secondary data, and case studies to demonstrate their real-life applicability and future impact across sustainability’s economic, social, environmental, and governance dimensions.
