Introducing the KASP Case Study
摘要
This introductory chapter establishes the intellectual foundations of the book by situating the study within the scholarship on public diplomacy, soft-power , and middle - power strategy . It argues that contemporary states increasingly employ educational and cultural initiatives not simply as social- policy instruments, but as strategic mechanism for sharing international perceptions, legitimacy, and influence. The discussion then turns to the post-September 11 environment, where the 9/11 attacks intensified global scrutiny of Saudi Arabia and generated new strains in Saudi-US, relations, elevating public diplomacy to a matter of national importance. Against this backdrop, the chapter identifies the central research puzzle , introduces the conceptual framework guiding the study, and clarifies its principal objectives and research questions. It also presents the King Abdullah Scholarship Program (KASP) as the book's central case study. The chapter concluded with an overview of the research methodology and the overall structure of the book.
