Introduction

The physics of active matter aims to understand the collective behavior of active objects, including living organisms, by extending the framework of statistical physics and concepts from condensed matter physics. The field of active matter has grown rapidly over the past quarter-century. This chapter provides a general introduction to active matter and outlines the background of this thesis.
