Profiles of Fertility

This chapter presents estimates of total fertility rate (TFR) for 707 districts of the country based on the data available from the National Family Health Survey, 2019–2021. The chapter also classifies 707 districts into six profiles of fertility depending upon the total marital fertility rate (TMFR) and proportion of reproductive age women who are married in a district relative to the TMFR and the proportion of married women of reproductive age in the country. The chapter highlights the variation in TFR across districts. In 326 of the 707 districts of the country, TFR is estimated to be below the replacement level, although there are 67 districts in which TFR is estimated to be very high, at least 3 births per woman of reproductive age. The chapter also reveals that 707 districts can be classified into six fertility profiles depending upon the level of TMFR and the proportion of reproductive age women who are married.
