Transitional Justice and Comic Books: Racial Injustice and Resistance in the Work of Marcelo D’Salete
摘要
Along its history, Brazil had several moments of repression and human rights violations, namely the period of Black slavery from the sixteenth to the nineteenth century. The extremely grave racial injustice and violence to which the Black population continues to endure is evidence that there are no effective transitional justice measures related to this important historical period. A fundamental pillar of transitional justice refers to non-repetition policies, in other words, the implementation of public policies with the purpose of preventing the reiteration of past violations, such as access to information, curriculum reform in schools, educational and training programs that cover all education levels, and social movements. This paper seeks to answer the following question: How can comic books become effective tools to implement non-repetition policies? From the bibliographical and documental research on the work of Marcelo D’Salete, this paper defends the qualification of comic books as essential instruments of political transition during the Black slavery period in Brazil. D’Salete is a Brazilian comic book writer and illustrator whose work emphasizes the human resistance during slavery times in Brazil and the grave consequences of racism and violence on Brazilian Black youth.
