Transitioning to Clean Energy: Assessing the Impact of Thermal Power Plant Emissions on Oral Cancer

The paper discusses the impact of gas and particulate emissions from a thermal power plant on oral cancer, highlighting the environmental consequences of non-renewable energy sources. It investigates the potential link between aerial pollutants and particulate matter (PM) emissions from coal-fired power plants and the incidence of oral cancer in Assam, focusing on Bongaigaon district where the Bongaigaon Thermal Power Station is located. The prevalence of oral cancer in this region is notably high, with studies suggesting a correlation with industrial emissions, particularly PM. Additionally, the widespread use of smokeless tobacco products like sadagura, zarda, and khaini has been identified as a contributing factor to oral cancer rates, highlighting the need for comprehensive research. The dispersion of inhalable particulates from coal-fired power plants can lead to oral cancer due to gas and particulate matter inhalation. This research aims to provide valuable insights into the relationship between industrial emissions, particularly PM, and oral cancer risk, facilitating the implementation of targeted preventive measures and public health interventions in the affected regions. By showcasing the harmful effects of traditional power plants, the paper implicitly emphasizes the need for cleaner, renewable energy sources to reduce emissions and mitigate health risks.
