Sustainable Cement-Mortar Alternative: A Pilot Study

The rapid growth of the construction industry, particularly in India, which reached a market size of $825.6 billion in 2023, has significantly improved living standards. However, this progress has come at the cost of increased carbon emissions, contributing to the global environmental crisis. This paper explores the environmental impacts of construction pollutants and the potential for recycling to create a more sustainable alternative. Specifically, it focuses on developing a greener, more affordable replacement for cement-mortar, commonly used for building boundary walls. By repurposing non-degradable waste materials, such as textile and plastic waste, this study proposes an eco-friendly solution that reduces reliance on non-renewable resources while promoting more efficient construction methods. The paper will also involve experimental work to enhance mortar properties by incorporating fibers, textile waste, and plastic waste. These modifications aim to improve the material’s strength, durability, and sustainability, providing a viable alternative to traditional materials. Ultimately, the research seeks to redefine industry norms, fostering a shift toward more sustainable, resource-efficient construction practices for the future.
