At the end of the Qing Dynasty and the beginning of the Republic of China, with the rise and fall of the Boxer Rebellion and the end of the military examination system, traditional martial arts gradually fell into a development predicament. During this period, influenced by neighboring Japan, inspired by the book The Bushido of China, and driven by the educational ideology of militaristic nationalism, martial arts, which were in a predicament of inheritance, quickly reversed the situation of being eliminated and became the representative of the martial spirit of people, a cultural fortress that invigorated the national spirit, resistance of foreign invasions, and defense of national self-esteem. The establishment of Jingwu Athletic Association marked the call of the times for “strengthening the nation and its people” among martial arts practitioners.
