Green Synthesis of Nanoparticles from Medicinal Plants and Their Applications in Skin Aging and Regeneration

The combination of nanotechnology and phytotherapy provides new insights for anti-aging treatments. Medicinal plant extracts have long been used for alternative medicine. Now, they can be a promising resource for green synthesis of metallic nanoparticles such as silver, gold, and zinc oxide. Available methods for the green synthesis are eco-friendly since they use phytochemicals from plant extracts. These extracts hold metabolites that work as reducing and stabilizing agents for the synthesis mechanisms. There is no need for harmful chemicals or high-energy processes, which support current trends for reducing carbon trace. The nanoparticles produced through green synthesis can provide high levels of antioxidants, and they can hold anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial capacities. These are usually associated with preventing skin aging by boosting physiological responses. In this chapter, characterization and action mechanisms of these nanoparticles will be discussed. The important factors that affect nanoparticle synthesis, such as the type of plant and method of extraction, and/or reaction conditions, are also covered in the chapter. Some factors that may affect biocompatibility, possible toxicity, and some regulatory concerns will bring a better look at their potential in cosmetics and medicine, and how they may influence user preferences. By bringing together natural chemistry and nanotechnology, this chapter presents a new and environment-friendly alternatives for developing future anti-aging treatments.
