Key Enablers Driving the Transition Towards Regenerative Built Environments

The transition to regenerative built environments requires more than project-level strategies and actions. It also depends on broader enabling conditions that allow the built environment industry to shift its cultural, legislative and economic foundations. This chapter presents key enablers across these areas that emerged from both practical evidence and established knowledge in regenerative development. Importantly, these key enablers are positioned not as isolated mechanisms but as interconnected, mutually reinforcing pathways that collectively establish conditions that are more conducive to implementing regenerative practices in the built environment. This chapter outlines the importance of establishing a cultural willingness to embrace regenerative practices throughout the built environment industry. It also emphasises the central role that emerging policies and regulations can play in accelerating this systemic change, and how compelling value propositions for regenerative built environments can broaden an understanding of value well beyond a narrow perspective of financial returns. By highlighting these dynamics and their synergies, this chapter demonstrates that the transition to regenerative built environments is achieved through coordinated action across practice, policy and value systems. Ultimately, these enabling factors will strengthen the built environment industry’s capacity and capability to deliver regenerative built environments at scale and with lasting impact.
