Regenerative Built Environments Require Collective and Transdisciplinary Co-creation

Delivering regenerative built environments is not something that can be achieved on your own. It is an inherently collective and co-creative process that breaks down disciplinary boundaries to establish shared purpose and reveal the unique value-adding potential of a project and its place. This chapter demonstrates how a project’s positive impact can largely stem from connecting people with each other and with the systems of their place through this shared purpose and commitment. It presents three key strategies to guide how this co-creative process can be implemented. The first strategy shows that discovering the essence and potential of a place is a transdisciplinary process where diverse and sometimes unexpected voices, experiences and knowledge are a source of inspiration. The second strategy relates to forming co-creative partnerships based on trust, transparency and shared commitment to deliver a project, which can be how systemic inequalities within the industry are broken down. The third strategy is about tapping into and strengthening the larger collective efforts of those working towards positive change throughout the built environment industry. Various inspiring projects from around the world are presented in this chapter to demonstrate this collective and co-creative process in action.
