Game-Based Training of Noncognitive Abilities: Efficacy and Prospects
摘要
This chapter examines the effects of the training program developed based on our competency assessment findings. Socio-emotional noncognitive abilities—consistently shown in our surveys to influence workers’ productivity—are the focus of this intervention. To train these abilities effectively, our team created a board-game-based program grounded in behavior modeling theory, enabling trainees to learn through observation, simulation, and engaging game activities. The chapter analyzes the program’s efficacy using data from 504 workers in Ethiopian garment-sector small and medium enterprises, applying a quasi-experimental design with pre- and post-intervention questionnaires. The training, centered on two board games and guided reflection, significantly improved participants’ work-related soft skills, and the analysis further identifies factors associated with workers’ levels of noncognitive abilities. To address the potential interests of training practitioners and policymakers in adopting the technique, the chapter outlines the steps to develop game-based training (GBT) for noncognitive abilities.
