Study on Compressive Strength Characteristics of Fine-Grained Soil Mixed with Sand and Jute Fibre

In this study the improvement of unconfined compressive strength of fine-grained soil has been done using sand as well as jute fibre. Different lengths (5, 10, 15, 20, and 25 mm) and different proportions (0.10 to 0.40% with respect to dry weight of soil) of jute fibre have been used to get the optimum length and optimum fibre content. Sand content has been varied from 5 to 25% to get the optimum quantity of sand content. Different proportions of soil and sand have been mixed to prepare the samples at optimum moisture content and maximum dry density of raw soil. Similarly different proportions of soil and jute fibre has been mixed thoroughly to understand the effect of reinforcement on fine-grained soil. Analysing the results of the experiment of three different kinds of fine-grained soil, it is observed that the optimum fibre length lies from 10 to 15 mm and the optimum sand content is observed to be 15%. The strength of soil has been increased about 1.23 to 1.37 times in the case of jute fibre mixed soil as compared to raw soil. The strength of soil has been increased about 1.12 to 1.27 times in case of sand mixed soil as compared to raw soil. From the analysis, it is assumed that the strength of the soil is increased mainly due to interface friction between soil and reinforcing materials. Hence, sand and jute fibre could be used to enhance the strength parameter of fine-grained soil.
