Effect of Jute Fiber Reinforcement on Soil Behavior Considering Standard and Modified Proctor Tests

Soil strength improvement is essential for weak soil to enhance the bearing capacity of the soil. Compaction is a widely used method to achieve maximum dry density (MDD) at optimum moisture content (OMC). Standard Proctor test is used worldwide for determining the compaction characteristics of soil. However, Modified Proctor test is required for important structures. The use of jute fiber in soil may improve the strength where soil quality is not very good and compaction is not enough for construction works. The use of jute fiber may also reduce construction costs substantially. In this study, the fiber was cut into two lengths (20 and 25 mm) and mixed with soil samples at varying percentages from 2 to 6% in 1% increment based on dry soil weight. Standard Proctor test was carried out to verify the effect of jute fiber on compaction characteristics of soil. The results were then compared with the changes in compaction characteristics of soil considering Modified Proctor test. It was observed that the MDD increased due to the incorporation of jute fiber for both Standard and Modified Proctor tests. Significant soil strength improvement was observed in the Modified Proctor test compared to the Standard Proctor test without incorporation of jute fiber. However, the effect of jute fiber on soil strength improvement was more significant considering Standard Proctor test compared to Modified Proctor test. Triaxial tests were also performed to determine the shear strength of the reinforced soil, showing significant improvement with the incorporation of jute fiber.
