The Realities of Social Care in Indonesia: The Cases of Older People Living In-Place and Nursing Homes in Four Indonesian Provinces

IndonesiaIndonesia" \r "Indonesia1 has a large young population, but at the same time, it is ageing rapidly. The country has nearly 33 million individuals (11.75%) aged 60 or more, but by 2050, the number will increase to 74 million, or nearly a quarter of the total population (BPS 2023). This chapter explores how Indonesian old people, especially in low-income contexts, experience receiving care support, whether from family or the private sector, faith-based, or community-supported social care providers as well as how their perception about the ideal old-age living arrangements and care are intersected. The chapter also investigates factors that might serve as facilitators or barriers to accessing this support. In doing so, the study demonstrates the perceptions of relevant household members and their experiences in providing social care for their ageing parents or family.
