Experimental Investigation on Application of Textile Fiber Mesh in Conventional Concrete

The chapter presents an extensive experimental investigation of textile reinforcement using alkali-resistant (AR) glass fibers. Textile-reinforced composites are increasingly being used in the construction industry to substitute steel reinforcement in thin, light-weight concrete components such as panels and shells by using textile fibers. In addition, there is an increasing trend in exquisitely designed houses in cities, prompting engineers and architects explore the use of glass-fiber-reinforced concrete (GFRC) to produce decorative panels, cladding, architectural features, and structural components. A two-layer approach, with a face coat and a back layer, is used in AR-GFRC applications. This study investigated the mechanical properties of AR-GFRC, including impact, compressive, and flexural strength. The research was carried out in conjunction with conventional reinforced concrete and GFRC using standard methods, and it was found that GFRC stands out better in properties, with 18% better flexural strength and 12% better compressive strength, giving the concrete an enhanced tensile strength along with satisfactory comprehensive strength. GFRC may also be used to manufacture aesthetic concrete products such as façade wall panels and concrete work surfaces, because of its versatility, durability, and light weight, that results in corrosion-free solutions.
