Mato System: Managing Agency Problems in Padang Restaurants

  • Dadan Rahadian

摘要

The restaurant industry, dominated by SMEs, faces agency problems due to short-term gains and opportunistic behaviour. The mato system, a real-time monitoring mechanism in Padang restaurants, helps mitigate these issues by allowing servers to observe customer consumption accurately. This system aligns the principal's goal of maximizing revenue with the agents’ actions, promoting transparency and accountability. The mato system’s effectiveness is based on its real-time nature, minimizing information distortion. The lack of such a system would increase the principal's reliance on unreliable agent reporting, raising agency costs. The system aligns with core agency theory concepts, particularly those concerning information asymmetry and monitoring, providing a practical example of reducing agency problems in a specific cultural context.
