Tradition-Based Family Enterprises and the Strategic Positions for Competitive Advantage
摘要
Indonesia’s deep connection to culture and tradition is a fertile ground for family enterprises to view traditions as valuable resources. Local traditions such as Batik textiles, gudeg culinary heritage, jamu traditional herbal drinks, and local artisanal pottery are among the resources utilized by enterprises as their main products. On the one hand, reliance on traditions that insist on past practices poses a challenge to business performance. On the other hand, a growing body of literature has acknowledged the significance of tradition as a resource for innovation. By examining tradition-based family firms, this chapter expands the family business literature by identifying strategies that enable family firms to navigate continuity and change, thereby achieving a competitive advantage. Narrative analysis was applied to the stories of family enterprises collected from the Tradition and Heritage Renewal and Innovation in Family Enterprise (THRIVE) project across various industries in Indonesia. By focusing on how the narratives connect the past, present, and future, the resulting framework illustrates the interplay between two critical dimensions: the approach to tradition as the foundation of family enterprises and their strategic orientation as a competitive stance. The framework identifies four strategic positions—Guardians, Weavers, Optimizers, and Trailblazers—which contribute to the family business literature by indicating that a competitive advantage can be achieved not only through forward-looking innovation but also by preserving the past through heritage. This framework is also relevant for family business practitioners by providing guidance to engage with tradition as a key asset for the business.
