Culture-Based Tourism as a Driver of Local Economic Growth and Identity Preservation: A Study of Yogyakarta, Bali, and Toraja

  • Hendri Hermawan Adinugraha

摘要

Culture-based tourism in Indonesia not only stimulates local economic growth but also plays a vital role in preserving cultural identity. This chapter focuses on Yogyakarta, Bali, and Toraja, regions with distinctive traditions, philosophies, and cultural values that have become important tourist attractions. Despite their strengths, tourism development in these areas faces significant challenges, including cultural commodification, unequal distribution of economic benefits, and environmental degradation. The analysis explores how integrating local values, such as the Tri Hita Karana philosophy in Bali, the Toraja customary system, and the palace traditions and arts in Yogyakarta, can enhance destination attractiveness while fostering community welfare. The comparative approach used in this chapter provides a novel perspective, emphasizing the importance of collaboration between government, local communities, and the private sector in ensuring tourism is inclusive and sustainable. The findings suggest that culture-based tourism not only enriches the visitor experience but also strengthens cultural resilience and supports long-term economic empowerment. This chapter contributes an integrative model of culture-based tourism management that is both practical and relevant within contemporary Indonesian studies.
