Iron Man and Black Gold
摘要
China’s journey to oil self-sufficiency began with geologist Li Siguang’s defiant 1953 challenge to Western theories, which posited that China’s petroleum future lay in continental basins. This led to the strategic eastward exploration that discovered the Daqing Oilfield in 1959. Symbolized by the “Iron Man” spirit of Wang Jinxi, this triumph declared China’s oil independence by 1963. The industry’s evolution continued beyond Daqing with the rise of the Changqing Oilfield in the Ordos Basin. Through technological innovation, Changqing mastered ultra-low-permeability reservoirs, eventually surpassing Daqing in output. Today, China’s onshore future is a dual frontier: employing enhanced recovery to extend the life of mature eastern fields while pioneering deep (over 4500 meters) and unconventional shale and tight resources in western basins like Tarim and Sichuan. This path—from ideological breakthrough to technical mastery—underscores the relentless national quest for energy security.
