Roads Less Travelled
摘要
China’s journey from the drilling of its first oil well producing 750 kilograms of crude per day in 1878 to becoming a global energy powerhouse is an epic of national endeavor. Yet, this historic ascent has reached a critical crossroads defined by towering oil and gas import dependency and the imperative of the “dual carbon” goals. To navigate this juncture, the industry is deploying a dual strategy. It is launching a technological offensive into ultra-deep, offshore, and unconventional frontiers to bolster domestic supply, while simultaneously pivoting to integrate into the energy transition. This involves large-scale carbon capture, green power projects at oilfields, and systemic efficiency gains. Ultimately, the foundational saga of mastering rock, hole, and choke is evolving. China's future energy security is being redefined by weaving renewable energy and low-carbon technologies into a resilient, diversified tapestry, ensuring its progress is sustained by harnessing both the earth beneath and the innovations above.
