The “as low as reasonably achievable” or ALARA is a fundamental principle in radiation protection aimed at minimizing exposure to ionizing radiation. It is designed to ensure that all reasonable steps are taken to keep radiation doses as low as possible while still achieving the necessary tasks that involve radiation. The ALARA principle is a guiding framework in radiation safety that emphasizes three elements, technological feasibility, economic considerations, and societal factors as illustrated in Fig. 9.1. It mandates that every reasonable effort should be made to maintain radiation exposures below established regulatory limits, thereby safeguarding both individual and public health. The objective is to balance the benefits of radiation use with the risks associated with exposure.
