Principles and Practices for Teaching Oracy Skills to Young L2 Learners
摘要
Oracy skills, including speaking and listening, are essential for young second-language learners as they support effective communication and academic progress. However, teaching oracy to these learners poses challenges due to their shorter attention spans, preference for play, and varied exposure to the target language. Traditional methods that focus on memorization and scripted conversations often fail to develop genuine communication skills, as they tend to emphasize accuracy over fluency and offer few opportunities for real-life interactions. This chapter presents nine research-based principles to address these issues and guide effective oracy instruction for young L2 learners. The principles include providing rich, comprehensible input, and creating opportunities for meaningful interaction that reflect everyday communication. The principles also emphasize focusing on key language features such as vocabulary, grammar, and pronunciation, while maintaining a supportive classroom environment that encourages risk-taking and peer collaboration. Additional principles discussed in the chapter present the importance of integrating language learning with other subjects to enhance relevance, encouraging multisensory engagement through hands-on activities, offering independent practice opportunities, using technology thoughtfully, and assessing oracy skills through comprehensive methods. By applying these principles, teachers can create a dynamic and supportive classroom environment in which young L2 learners develop confidence, fluency, and effective communication skills. The chapter concludes by emphasizing the need for interactive activities and well-planned lessons that meet the unique needs of young learners, helping them develop communication skills that support both academic and personal success.
